A student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State (AAUA) was swept away by a flood in the town on Monday 7th October 2019. The victim who has been identified as Doyinsola Boluwade was a final-year student of the Department of Religious and African Studies in the institution.
It was alleged that the victim ‘Doyinsola’ was swept away by flood to a nearby canal while she was going to her place of residence during a heavy downpour. The landlord of the victim, Mr Ademola Elemukona, also confirmed the incident and said he narrowly escaped being swept away as he had to climb a cocoa tree when the flood was getting uncontrollable.
“So many people thought I had been swept away by the flood, but I thank God that I survived it” he stated. The Head of Media and Protocol Unit at the AAUA, Mr Victor Akinpelumi, also confirmed the incident with a saddened heart laying emphasis that a search party had been organised by the school management to locate the student, but as of the time of filing this report, she is yet to be seen.
Akinpelumi said: “The water level is very high and we do not have professional divers currently who can dive into the river. But we have made contact with the National Emergency Management Agency and some other agencies to assist us in finding her. Presently, we are at the scene of the incident seeking solutions.”
Mr Gboyega Adefarati, who is the Ondo State Commissioner for Agriculture also visited the scene of the incident and urged all the residents to stay away from the canal.
