DanMalam Mohammed, Edo State Commissioner of Police, today Wednesday 16th October 2019 confirmed the death of a hardworking police sergeant, Yusuf Igoche who got shot during a gun duel with armed robbers on Lagos-Benin Expressway on Tuesday15th October 2019.
The sergeant was said to be on escort duty with a school principal who unfortunately sustained several injuries but he was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and is receiving treatment. The commissioner said that they were on their way to Lagos from Enugu State when they ran into an ambush.
“They were coming from Enugu state, the police sergeant, Yusuf was on escort with the principal when they ran into an ambush of armed robbers. He came out to save them both but unfortunately he lost his life,” he said. The commissioner of police said that the case is under investigation and a formal report on how the incident occurred has been made at the Edo State police command.
He said: “ As I’m talking to you, investigation as started and I just sent a team of combined police officers into the bush now. On the day the incident occurred, the robbers followed them and they abandoned their car and am sure a lot of things will be recovered from the car.”
A police confirmed source said the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Benin Bypass area. It was also revealed that the gunmen came out of surrounding bushes from different routes and started firing gunshots on the Lexus GX470 Sportscar conveying the deceased Igoche and the injured school principal.
The matter was also raised in a parliament meeting of the State House of Assembly and it was resolved as an urgent national importance by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Yekini Idiaye. s a result, security were briefed up in every area with maximum tight road checkpoints mounted by the police, soldiers and vigilante group.
