Professional football player and midfielder for Scottish Rangers, Joe Aribo, says watching Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu play for Super Eagles has greatly influenced his decision to abandon England to play for Nigeria. The England born footballer who scored his debut for Eagles in a 2-2 friendly draw against Ukraine in Dnipro last month, said he should not be compared to Okocha after his debut puts pressure on him.
Aribo stated that,
“I knew a few of the youngsters such as Ola Aina and Alex Iwobi and they all welcomed me and made me feel at home. I read the headline where a renowned journalist compared me to the legend Okocha after the Ukraine game – that’s putting a lot of pressure on me! I could and wanted to have played for England but my parents are from Nigeria and I always watched players like Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu as a kid and I was always inspired by them”.
The player expressed eagerness to prove himself further as he prepares to play against Brazil.
“Games don’t come much bigger than Brazil and we know they’ve got a lot of stars like Neymar and all.I’ll see so many stars and I’ll take a moment to realise this is what I have always dreamed about. I have always wanted and dreamed of playing for my country and this dream of mine is coming to reality. Nigeria is a great home and I hope to keep playing no matter what may come” Aribo concluded”.
