Lawyer’s absence in court stalls Port Harcourt serial killer’s arraignment

Still on the case of the serial killer of Port Harcourt who has been charged with the murder of about 7 women. He was to face a judge on Monday 21st October 2019 but the absence of a lawyer to represent the suspect known as Gracious West, stalled his arraignment at the Rivers State High Court.

The suspect, Gracious West was arrested by security personnel while he was on his way to Akwa Ibom State from Port Harcourt after he allegedly killed two women in Lagos, Owerri and five others in different hotels in the city of Port Harcourt. Before the arrest of West on September 19th 2019, he was always luring young women to hotels and after having fun with them, he would strangle them and escape from the hotel.

Gracious West was brought to court on Monday with heavily armed personnel of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, fully securing him. At about 10.28 am, he found out that he was not being represented by any counsel.

This new development made it impossible for the charges to be read to him and for the judge to proceed with the case. Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who is the trialling judge observed the absence of counsel to the suspect and made it a ruling that the suspect was entitled to a counsel before he could be properly arraigned.

The Justice adjourned the case till Tuesday 22nd October 2019, adding that the matter deserved a timely and expeditious hearing.
