Dr Isa Pantami, the current Minister of Communications, has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to compel telecommunications service providers to reduce the prices of data that is being offered to subscribers. Dr Isa also ordered the commission to put an immediate stop to ‘illegal’ deduction of subscribers’ data by the telecoms.
The minister was said to be worried about the ridiculous amount Nigerians have to pay for data without enjoying value for the money spent.
Making reference to a report which was taken from a UK-based price comparison website cable, Nigeria is not even amongst the top 10 African countries with low average price of data, which in fact is a position the Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Pantami, finds very disturbing considering the fact that the country has over 174 million active internet users.
Minister Isa Pantami also finds it highly unacceptable that with the excessive-high cost of data in Nigeria, the citizens do not really enjoy value for money as subscribers have to battle daily with the illegal deduction of data, poor quality of service which at most times becomes unbearable among others. “It is against this backdrop that the minister directed the Nigerian Communications Commission, the telecom regulators, to urgently and immediately work hand in hand with all the telecom operators and ensure a downward positive review of the price of data in Nigeria, also improve the quality of service provided and finally check the illegal deduction of subscribers’ data,” Dr Isa Pantami said.
