The Ekiti State Police Command arrested a woman on Sunday 22nd September 2019, who allegedly stole a two-month-old baby boy in Ado-Ekiti on Friday 20th September 2019.
The Police told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti that 39-year-old, Mercy Momoh was caught at her residence in Odo space of the urban centre by operatives of the command.
Reports confirmed that Momoh, a native of Edo State, was alleged to have stolen the baby from his mother, Mrs Funmilayo Sunday, on Friday 20th September 2019, at the state government secretariat. She was aforementioned to have tricked the baby’s mother into following her to the secretariat underneath the pretence of serving to her influence the gathering of some relief materials being given to flood victims by the state government.
Momoh was said to have asked the baby’s mother to help her buy a recharge card and that she should drop her phone and leave the baby with her but she disappeared with the baby before the mother returned from the errand.
The command’s interpreter, Caleb Ikechukwu (DSP), said that investigations were still ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the incident. “The suspect goes by the name Mercy Momoh, she is a 39year old lady from Edo State. She was apprehended through a tip-off and will be prosecuted with the conclusion of investigations.
“The suspect was nice to the mother of the victim which was why she was able to get the baby easily. Investigations are still ongoing. More details will come on what transpired”. Ikechukwu suggested the general public to watch out in their relationships with strangers, adding that they must not get frenzied by any act of kindness being shown by them.
