President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday 23rd October 2019, gave a strict warning to those who trade in sex for grades. The president stated that anyone caught henceforth for committing the act or offence in any higher institution would be made to face the full weight of the law.
President Buhari further warned that his administration would not condone any form of indiscipline and misdemeanour towards the youth of this generation. The President also said he had directed the appropriate government agencies to take swift and firm action against any lecturer or other category of workers who are found in this demeaning act of sexual assault or harassment in the nation’s educational system.
President Buhari who gave this warning in his address at the 35th convocation of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) said this with a saddened heart. “Our higher institutions can do without the negative and scandalous attention which are being paid to them and our dear nation in the wake of trending stories of sex-for-grades and sexual harassment, which has assumed a global dimension”.
“It is disheartening and saddening that people who we expect to train, tutor, guide and groom students turned out to breach the trust and confidence reposed in them by exploiting the students who were entrusted into their care and under their responsibility From now on, all culprits shall face the full wrath of the law as they will be prosecuted and those found guilty will serve the stiffest punishment under the law.”
