Chikaodinaka Nwankpa, a professor at the University of Drexel, Philadelphia, spent nearly $200,000 of federal research grants at strip clubs in Philadelphia. The Drexel University, however, after all, court cases settled with the federal prosecutors for $190,000 on Monday 9th Of October 2019 to avoid a potential lawsuit from the Justice Department, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The settlement was an utmost effort to recoup funds that the former head of Drexel’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering squandered during his visit to the strip club. After an internal audit which took place in 2017, the university discovered that Professor Nwankpa used the money to make personal iTunes purchases as well as for some goods and services at a club called Cheerleaders and also Risque and Tacony Club between July 2007 and April 2017.
“This is an example of conspicuous and audacious fraud at the highest level and its a shameful misuse of public funds. The said agencies that have been providing these grants expect them to be used towards the great advancements in energy and naval technology suitable for public benefit, not for personal entertainment,” the U.S Attorney, William McSwain, said.
Drexel University has cooperated with the federal investigation. Professor Nwankpa after all was said and done, has repaid the sum of $53,328 to the university. After due apology, he has also resigned in lieu of termination and has effectively been debarred from any Federal Government contract for six months. He has therefore learnt a great lesson.
