Patrick Obilo, a prosecution witness who is also an auditor with the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has recounted how the chief accounting officer of the Makurdi Zone of the board, Samuel Umoru and a clerical officer in the same office, Mrs Philomina Chieshe, attempted to bribe a JAMB auditor, Mallam Ibrahim Oba, with the sum of N50,000.
Patrick Obilo enlightened Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, Abuja, that the bribe was meant to prevent the auditor from carrying out a financial audit of the zonal officer Umoru and Chieshe who were first and second defendants respectively. They were brought in for a charge against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the disappearance of the sum of N35m belonging to JAMB.
During Obilo’s cross-examination, he disclosed that Oba was sent to the Makurdi office of JAMB in 2016 for a routine examination of the account books and the consignment notes, which showed large amount of items supplied such as the e-facility cards used to check and print results, change of course card, scratch cards, receipts or tellers and so on.
The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, on Tuesday 1st of October confirmed that the witness revealed that while they were in Makurdi, Chieshe made a visit to the Oba’s hotel room with an envelope that contained the sum of N50,000 which was a gift from her boss Umoru and urged him to return to Abuja.
The auditor who sensed danger immediately reported the situation to the head of the JAMB’s Audit Unit, James Ochijele in Abuja and he, in turn, ordered that the N50,000 be paid into the board’s account.
Ochijele replaced Oba with Obilo for the same assignment which had been earlier assigned to him at the Makurdi office. While the account books were being examined in the Makurdi Office, Obilo said he discovered a budget deficit in the proceeds from the sales of e-facility cards and change of course forms to the tune of N35.4m which were not remitted to the board’s account.
After hearing from all parties involved, the trial judge adjourned the matter to January 21st 2020 for continuation of the trial.

Professor Akin Abayomi, who is the present commissioner for health in Lagos state announced the state government’s commitment to revitalising the Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in the state. Facebook announced to the public on Monday 23rd September 2019 about its deal to buy a startup working on various ways to command computers or other technological devices using thought instead of taps, swipes or keystrokes. According to the vice president, Andrew Bosworth, of augmented and virtual reality of the California-based social network, CTRL-labs will become part of Facebook Reality Labs with an aim of perfecting the technology and getting it into consumer products.

36 cows were struck to death over the weekend by thunder at Ijare community in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State. The cows that were thirty-six in range were aforesaid to have been moved by Fulani herdsmen into the community’s sacred groove, settled on the town’s mountain prime once the disaster occurred.
According to a reliable and verified source, the herders took their cattle to Oke Owa bush, a hometown in Ondo State. According to tradition, only the king is permitted to enter it because it is regarded as sacred. Fortunately, none of the herdsmen died because they ran away immediately they noticed that their cows were struck dead by a sudden thunder. No rain had fallen so it was surprising to them. According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, Nigeria spends 1.2 billion dollars for the importation of fish into the country annually. Sesan Ojo from Ilesa in Osun state has been living in Trinidad and Tobago for twelve years. He is homeless and had been sick for three years without a job or means of coming back home, having lost contact with his family for a long time. Mrs Oyetola heard about the man through a viral video and being a humanitarian she was moved by his plight and decided to help.

The latest victim of the gruesome killing who is yet to be identified, according to Rivers Police Public Relation Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, was discovered with her two legs tied together with a piece of white cloth. Another piece of white cloth which was obviously used to strangle her was still on her neck. The police spokesperson added that the remains of the lady, who seemed to be in her early 20s was discovered at a hotel room in Omoku, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, local government area of Rivers State.
The leader of Sufficient Grace and Truth Ministry, Bishop Seun Adeoye, has alleged that the state government is planning to tax religion houses in Osun State. During a press conference which was held in Osogbo on Wednesday 18th September, Adeoye, who is spokesman for the African World Bishops Council, had stated that the state Internal Revenue Service had compiled a list of religious centres in preparation to asking them to pay tax.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the lower chamber of the National Assembly would ensure that Nigerians get adequate supply for the electricity they pay for.
The House of Representatives will give adequate attention to the practice of estimated billing by the electricity distribution companies to address the challenges Nigerians face Gbajabiamila said. Operatives of the Kaduna zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested six suspected fraudsters, including a Nigeria Correction Service officer, for defrauding Nigerians using bank details obtained through SIM swaps and Automated Teller Machines.
The suspects have been identified as: Urulo Henry,who is an Inspector with the Enugu Command of Nigerian Correctional Service, Ugonna Owete, Ugonna Obinna, Chigbo Chidiebere, Oha Kingsley and Ahamefula Izuchukwu. The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement in Abuja today Wednesday 18th September 2019, said the suspects were arrested in separate operations, sequel to a petition by a customer of Access Bank.
A certain woman who has been identified as Stella Peter, has stabbed her live-in lover named Bala Haruna to death over their daughter’s birthday party. The duo was said to have had an argument before the 23-year-old Susan Peter, got a knife and stabbed Haruna to death.
The incident happened around 6:00 AM. on Tuesday 17th September 2019, at their home in Surulere area of Lagos State. She was subsequently arrested by the police when her neighbors raised the alarm of the crime she had just committed. The police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident.

The governor of Ebonyi State ‘’David Umahi’ has announced his plan to appoint 800 new aides, in addition to the 4,000 appointments already made by his administration.

No fewer than three persons lost their lives on Sunday evening in Ede, Osun State, as a bus conveying them plunged into Osun River. Reports confirmed that the accident occurred late in the evening on Sunday 15th September 2019 but rescue operations did not commence on time to save the victims. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has advised Nigerians to stop the consumption of non-iodised salt, saying it is detrimental to human health.The Director of Public Affairs- Dr Abubakar Jimoh of the agency, gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja today Tuesday 17th September 2019.
The director spoke while responding to the rumour that people in the rural communities were still consuming the local salt which was not processed.He said that the consumption of such local salt could lead to goitre and other diseases that are dangerous to human health and called on Nigerians to do away with such salt.
National Examination Council has withheld the results of over 30,000 candidates in public schools in Niger State. This is due to the inability of the State Government to pay their examination fees.The students are currently unable to access their NECO May/June SSCE, results released on August 27th 2019.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja has delivered its judgement in the case instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, challenging the outcome of the February 23rd 2019 presidential election.
The Tribunal said that none of the documents tendered by the petitioners was utilised to prove the allegations, such as over-voting.
